Beginning a search for an aluminum extrusion partner can be challenging. There are hundreds of companies to choose from with a wide variety of specializations and services. There are two key factors to an aluminum extrusion project that will help pare down the list of potential aluminum extrusion partners.

  1. Circle Size: This is the maximum size of parts an extrusion press can manufacture. Circle size describes the largest circle that can be drawn around the extrusion design. For example, a 3.0” diameter tube would have a circle size of 3”.
  2. Aluminum Alloy: Knowing which alloy is the best solution for your design is important. Most extrusion plants specialize in producing three or four alloys. Profile Precision Extrusions produces 6063 and 6061 primarily.

How to Search for the Right Aluminum Extrusion Partner

Once you’ve calculated the circle size and identified the appropriate alloy for your design, you’re ready to start looking for a partner. Using your favorite search engine, start by looking for aluminum extrusion companies near you. Look for page titles like Capabilities, Extrusions, Technical Information, or About Us. These should quickly help you determine if the company has the equipment for the circle size of your design and extrudes the alloy you’ve chosen. If you have trouble finding a local company, expand your search from local to regional. Unless you’re looking for a miniature extruder specialist like Profile Precision Extrusions, you may not have to expand your search nationally.

Questions to Ask a New Aluminum Extrusion Partner

Now that you’ve identified two or three potential partners with the right size extrusion presses for your design, and extrude the alloy you need, you’re ready to contact them. The three most important questions to ask are:

  1. What is your minimum order size? Some companies like Profile Precision Extrusions do not have a minimum order size. Others have a 5,000-pound minimum order.
  2. Do you perform secondary work like cutting to length or CNC machining? Some companies like Profile Precision Extrusions offer an extensive list of value-added services, while others do not.
  3. Do you offer coatings like anodized or powder coat paint?

Finally, ask what industries each potential partner specializes in supplying. If your design is intended for the Medical Device industry, it’s probably not best to have a supplier specializing in the Window & Door industry.
