Profile Precision Extrusions reviews hundreds of aluminum tubing and extruded shape designs each month. Each designer has specific and often unique questions related to their project. While we can produce a variety of designs, we aren’t able to produce large designs. The parts we produce must fit within a 4.5” diameter circle. We currently specialize in 6061 and 6063 alloys and we also produce small quantities of 3003, 7075, and some custom alloys. In those cases where we can’t produce the design, we do our best to recommend another top aluminum extruder who specializes in their design or alloy. How Much Does an Extrusion Die Cost?

The cost of an aluminum extrusion die depends on if the extrusion is hollow or solid, the size of the design, and the complexity of the design. A die for a solid aluminum extrusion is made from a single piece of H13 tool steel. It’s the least expensive die for extrusion. The average cost of a solid die is $750 and takes 2-3 weeks to manufacture. A die for a hollow design requires two pieces of steel and the average cost is $1,500. A hollow die takes 3 weeks to manufacture. An extrusion die for a very complex hollow design with multiple voids can cost from $4,000 – $5,000 and takes 10 weeks to build.
What is the Minimum Order Size?
Profile Precision Extrusions may be the only company in our industry that does not have a minimum order size. We’ll gladly produce 1 foot of aluminum extrusion, or 10,000 feet. Our philosophy is to make what the customer needs. Most aluminum extrusion companies charge the customer for the die AND to produce samples for them. We believe when a customer purchases a die it should include samples. We supply samples for free with the purchase of an extrusion die.
What is the Lead Time?
We’re often asked what the lead time is for an order. Lead time depends on how busy we are and how many processes we perform to complete your order. For aluminum extrusion orders that are just extruded, cut to 10-12 feet long, packaged and shipped, the lead time can be as short as 3 weeks. For other projects requiring multiple production steps the lead time can be as long as 12 weeks. For most projects the lead time is 4 to 6 weeks.
